Gratitude

You may have noticed that there was no post last week – there was no excuse for it other than that I got busy and didn’t plan accordingly. I apologize to my weekly followers!

Unfortunately, we are still in the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic which has interrupted all our lives. I am sure we have all had a range of emotions during this time, and I am not any different, but like I said in my previous post, I am not anxious and that remains the same. 

I have actually enjoyed the way I have been able to connect with people lately. For example, for the last two weekends, I have had video conference calls with my siblings and spent hours talking about all kinds of things, but mostly just laughing and enjoying each other’s company. We do not all live in the same city, so we usually only get to be together during the holidays.  This has been a nice alternative, given the circumstances. I have also had FaceTime dates with friends with whom I usually would only communicate via text. 

This leads me to today’s post on gratitude. I am learning to see the good in every situation despite what it looks like at first glance. We all have things to be grateful for, despite the current societal challenges. Most of the time, we focus on the negative or the one thing we do not have and that’s what defines our lives. 

Imagine if we chose to focus on the positive. The things that were going well. How do you think your outlook on life would change? What if we chose to be more grateful during this time…and focused on choosing gratitude every day?

Two Bible verses come to mind as I am writing this. The first is Matthew 12:34:

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 

Whatever is in our heart is revealed by our speech. So, to me, that means what I choose to dwell on will be revealed by what I say. Imagine if we all had grateful hearts, can you imagine how lovely our world would be? Think of the people in your life who are unhappy – how do you know they are unhappy? By the things they say. 

So now you’re wondering how to become more grateful. This leads me to Philippians 4:8:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 

Plain and simple – focus on the good. 

I challenge you today to fix your focus on the good and not the bad; it may give you a new appreciation for the life you have. Yes, I know things are not going well, people are losing jobs, having financial crises, lives are being lost. However, in your life today, I am sure you can think of a couple of things you are grateful for. It may take a few minutes or hours or even a day to come up with something, but it’s important to count your blessings. I dare you!

To give you a jumping off point, here is my “short” list of things I am grateful for:

  • God’s love, presence and faithfulness in my life.
  • My blessed life.
  • A clean bill of health.
  • My immediate family – I wouldn’t trade them for anything despite how much they get on my nerves sometimes!
  • My nephews.
  • “Extended” family – If you are Nigerian, you know all those aunts and uncles who are not really related to you but are closer than your actual blood. I am so grateful for them. Shout out to my favorite, Aunty Tola!
  • Friendships, new and old.
  • My great job.
  • Good music.
  • Good food.
  • Therapy – Where would I be without this?
  • Free delivery with Uber Eats.
  • No traffic daily (praise God).
  • Low gas prices.
  • Curbside pickup with my beauty supply (message me for the details).
  • Telemedicine – This has cut down on the number of patients I have to physically interact with.
  • Amazon Prime – Need I say more? 
  • Netflix – My current favorite is Money Heist. What should I watch next?
  • All these Instagram/Tik Tok challenges.
  • Good weather – It’s 68 degrees as I sit outside in the backyard writing this.

  1. I have some much to be grateful for. My toddler, Life, healthy parents, my family members, good health, friends, finances and a job. Some times I do need a reminder to count my blessings.
